Best things to do in Bacalar

Looking for things to do in Bacalar? Here are some ideas to plan your trip!

Note: Although boating activities are highly advertised in the area, I did not take part in any, and I do not recommend them whatsoever. The ecosystem of the lagoon is already quite fragile, and I do not wish to promote any further damage.

Swim in the Lagoon

The main attraction of Bacalar is definitely its pristine turquoise lagoon, also known as the “Lagoon of 7 colors”. Once you’ve seen it, it’s easy to understand why taking a dip is considered the best thing to do in Bacalar.

I’ll talk about places to swim later on in the article!

Rent a SUP or Kayak

One of the best ways to experience the stunning beauty of Bacalar is by paddle boarding or kayaking on its’ calm, turquoise waters. Paddle boarding, as well as kayaking, are popular activities in Bacalar due to its calm waters and stunning views. You can rent a paddle board or kayak from one of the many vendors in town, or via your hotel. The best time to paddle board or kayak in Bacalar is early in the morning, or late in the afternoon, when the light is softer and the temperature is cooler.

Plus, going out early in the morning or late in the afternoon also gives you the opportunity to see the sunrise or sunset! Many hotels offer sunrise tours, and you’ll definitely want to set your alarm for this activity!

Watch the sunset

If you’re in Bacalar, you don’t want to miss out on the gorgeous colors at sunset. If you’re looking for dinner with a sunset view, check out Mango y Chile. Otherwise, head down to one of the docks to catch a free show!

Get a massage

After a day of exploring the beauty of Bacalar, a relaxing massage is a must. There are plenty of massage therapists in town that offer various types of massages, from deep tissue to Swedish. Most massage therapists offer their services at very affordable rates, making it a great way to unwind after a long day of activities.

Grab a massage at Casa Yukti proposes individual or couples massages.

Rent a bike or moped

Bacalar is a small town that can easily be explored by bike or moped. Renting a bike or moped is a fun and affordable way to get around and see the town’s sights at your own pace. You can rent a bike or moped from one of the many vendors in town, or through your hotel.

If you’re looking to explore a bit further outside of town, then renting a moped to go to Los Rapidos or Mahaual for the day is an excellent option!

Below is a screenshot to give you an idea of where the rental shop is. Keep in mind that the “rental shop” is actually a small tienda that also happens to rent mopeds. If you can’t find it, you can ask the restaurants nearby and they can also help point you to the right direction!

Where to swim in Bacalar

Looking for places to swim in Bacalar? Seeing as the lagoon is not accessible from everywhere, it’s important to know where to go in order to take a dip. Here are a few different spots on the lagoon to enjoy a swim!

Muelle Publico

Located on the north end of the town, is the Muelle Publico, or rather two of them! If you head all the way to the end of the road, you’ll find 2 public docks. The one on the left is the old public dock that remains free of charge today. With a small hut on the end of the dock, it makes for a perfect spot to relax and not get a sunburn.

The dock on the right, is the more recently built public dock. Generally, access is free, however sometimes around weekends and holidays there will be a $20 MXN fee to access it ($1 USD).

This newer public dock is the perfect place to lay a towel, enjoy the water, and sun bathe for a few hours. You’ll find a mix of tourists and locals enjoying the area.

Los Rapidos

Located about 25 minutes south of Bacalar, the town, is Los Rapidos. Entry isn’t free, but once you’re there you can enjoy a rather unique part of the lagoon! A small section that acts as a river, and has a current that you can float down. You can grab a floaty or a life jacket if you wish and hop it to enjoy a relaxing float down the current!

After floating for a bit, you can take advantage of the sun docks and hammocks to make the most of your day.

Cost of entry: $150 MXN

Cost of locker: $50 MXN (+$50 MXN deposit)

Cenotes

Bacalar is home to several cenotes, which are natural swimming holes that are perfect for cooling off on a hot day. One of the most popular cenotes is Cenote Azul, which is known for its deep blue waters and lush greenery

Best free things to do in Bacalar

If you’re travelling on a budget (like myself), then you might be looking for the best free things to do in Bacalar. Luckily, there are plenty of options to choose from. One of the best things to do is to visit one of the many free public beaches, such as Cenote Azul or Laguna de los Siete Colores. These beaches offer stunning views and crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming or lounging on the shore.

Walk around

Classic, but true, stroll through the streets and enjoy the public square. Visit the town’s main square, where you can find plenty of restaurants and shops, as well as a beautiful church that dates back to the 18th century.

Fort San Felipe

Located only steps away from the main square, this impressive fortress, built in the 18th century, played an important role in the defense of the area against pirates and other invaders.

The stunning views of the lagoon from the top of the fortress are simply breathtaking.
