Planning your trip to Guatemala

Looking for a one of a kind experience. A place that’s off the beaten path and often overlooked? Well then start planning your trip to Guatemala !

Plus its a destination that is SAFE for solo travelers!

Where is Guatemala ?

Located in Central American, Guatemala shares borders with El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico and Belize. With over 108 sq KM, there is lots of terrain to explore in this big beautiful country.

Where is Guatemala

With 400 km of Pacific coastline, coastal lowlands and 2 different mountain ranges, there are lots of diverse landscapes to admire throughout the country.

Whether you’re looking to surf, visit a world reknown lake, hike up active volcanoes, or visit dense rainforests – you’ll find everything in Guatemala.

Best time to visit Guatemala

The best time to visit Guatemala depends on what you want to do and see. The dry season (November to April) is generally the best time to visit, particularly for outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring ancient Mayan ruins. The rainy season (May to October) can be a good time to visit to see some lush vegetation and waterfalls, but it can also be challenging for outdoor activities due to the frequent rain and potential for flooding.

So when planning your trip to Guatemala it’s best to know what kind of activities you’re interested in doing! But don’t worry, there are things to enjoy all year round!

Getting around Guatemala

By Plane

The main airport is located in Guatemala city and both international and domestic flights are available. If you’re short on time, or traveling long distances, this might be a good option! However, if you’ve got the time, I highly recommend using ground transport, which is easily done in Guatemala.

By Bus

Busses are the most common mode of transportation in Guatemala. From local chicken busses, to modern coaches, the bus network is extensive, with routes connection most major cities. It’s also a relatively affordable way to get around the country!

Recognize the Chicken Bus below? Look familiar? Guatemala imports old yellow school busses from the USA and transforms them into these beauties!

Night busses are also a great way to cross long distances (and yes they are comfortable!

By Shuttle

Probably the most comfortable and convenient way of getting around the country, shuttles are smaller buses that offer transportation between popular tourist destinations.

Rental Car

If you’re feeling adventurous and looking to explore the country at your own pace, then renting a car could be an option. Just keep in mind that driving in Guatemala can be challenging due to the narrow and winding roads, as well as the potential for crime.

If you’re looking for websites to book your various travel plans, head to the end of this post where I give you tons of different tools and tips !

Safety

Guatemala is a relatively safe country to visit. As a female traveler, I never felt like I was in danger or in an unsafe situation.

However, like with any destination, there are certain safety issues to keep in mind and it’s best to have situational awareness at all times.

Crime is a concern in Guatemala, particularly in urban areas. If you are aware of your surroundings and take precautions, you should be just fine !

Like with any destination, avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuables with you. It’s also best to avoid walking alone at night.

Personally, I avoided showing that I was carrying valuables with me. Avoid carrying your camera around your neck or in an easily recognizable camera bag. If travelling with your laptop or other valuables, avoid letting it show that you have these with you.

Additionally, every time I took transportation between destinations, I also made sure to keep my valuables with me in my carry-on sized backpack. It has been known that people get things stollen from their main luggage (which are generally stored on top of, or under busses).

I can also highly recommend using a small luggage lock. I use this one, which works great and gives me peace of mind !

When it comes to safety while on the road, if you plan on renting a car, it’s best to note that driving can be dangerous due to poor road conditions and reckless driving. Even as a passenger in public transport you can get a sense for just how crazy the road conditions are !

Despite these concerns, most people have safe  trips.
